On Friday, Sergei Prokofiev will play a work that shows the great tragedian Tchaikovsky from a very different side, one more inclined toward the beautiful things of existence. Tchaikovsky had a special love for the world of Mozart and the Rococo, to which the variations on a Rococo theme bear witness. The piece, entertaining at the highest level, is originally written for cello and orchestra, sometimes it is also played on viola. This time we hear a version for flugelhorn, a rare instrument in the classical setting, which the Russian star trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov also has in his baggage. This horn is actually a trumpet which can give the music wings. After the interval, the NDR Radiophilharmonie, conducted by Andrew Manze, brings the Fourth Symphony by Johannes Brahms.
