Samy Moussa is a successful Canadian composer from Montréal, whose new orchestral piece will be a source of great anticipation. James Ehnes is an internationally acclaimed violinist from Canada who is rarely heard in this country. He has brought with him one of the leading orchestras in his home country, the one from Vancouver, which is conducted by its Dutch chief conductor Otto Tausk. The violin concerto by the American Samuel Barber is one of the most frequently performed works of the 20th century, and no wonder, as it is full of melodic energy and delightful colour. Sergei Rachmaninov's Second Symphony concludes the programme with a piece that uniquely combines great emotions and harmonic artistry.
