The Czech master of the horn, Radek Baborák, proves his brilliance after the voluptuous notes of the 2nd concerto, which the wise old Richard Strauss dedicated to this instrument. The French master of the oboe, François Leleux, has also long been a master of the baton, which he is wielding this time on the podium of the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg. Baborák was already solo hornist of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 18, later a colleague of Leleux in Munich and finally a decade with the "Berliners". The concert opens with a rarely performed overture by the great English late romantic composer Edward Elgar - "In the South", composed in Italy and full of unforgettable, sensual impressions. Robert Schumann was inspired in his 3rd symphony by the idyllic landscape and the gothic cathedrals on the Rhine. Of course, he did not write illustrative music, but one in which the poetry and history of a region become a reflection of the human being.
