James Ehnes is an internationally acclaimed violinist from Canada who is rarely heard in this country. He has brought along one of the leading orchestras in his home country, the one from Vancouver, and interprets the touchstone for all classical violin virtuosos, the standard-setting concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the absolute pinnacles of Viennese classical music. Otto Tausk from the Netherlands, the orchestra's chief conductor, will be at the podium. After the interval, we will hear Sergei Prokofiev's monumental Fifth Symphony, composed in 1944, which is not only a patriotic manifesto but also a masterfully crafted symphony in the classical style with expressive and lyrical climaxes.
