Andrés Orozco-Estrada, one of the most exciting conductors of our time, has been Music Director of one of Germany's most traditional orchestras, the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, since this season. ‘The Nutcracker’ is one of those full-length ballets for which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is considered the grand master. The enchanting fairy tale is also an annual Christmas delight for young and old.  A selection of the most famous numbers results in an orchestral virtuoso ‘parade of hits’.  Engelbert Humperdinck's marvellously romantic opera ‘Hansel and Gretel’, whose overture opens the evening, also belongs to the Christmas season. Before the interval, star cellist Andreas Brantelid plays Tchaikovsky's brilliant and amusing Rococo Variations, probably one of the composer's most cheerful works.
