The Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, the Bachchor, the Salzburg Festival and Theater Kinderchor, alto Kate Aldrich and maestro Riccardo Minasi explore the vast symphonic cosmos of
Gustav Mahler. In nearly two hours, two sections and six sets, according to the composer, a "summer afternoon dream" occurs in his "Third," which can also be read and heard as the novel of life and transfiguration. It is a work that still seems bold in its construction - but more essential is the depth of thought and musical variety with which Mahler paints his world. In the introduction, Pan awakens and summer marches in in a procession of Bacchus. Not only the idyll,
but also the dangerous, even the devilish, of nature becomes intoxicating sound. A comprehensive panorama of the earthly emerges - "What the flowers in the meadow tell me" is lovely, but "the animals in the forest" announce archaic elemental forces. The human appears singing and longing for redemption. "What the angels tell me" gives folksong-like, poetic hope for a fulfilled afterlife. The vision of the divine lies in the final, beguilingly lyrical flowing phrase - "what love tells me."
