The Swedish-Danish star cellist Andreas Brantelid plays the highlight of the classical cello literature in the middle of this concert, the spirited and enjoyable C major concerto by Joseph Haydn. In partnership with one of Germany's most traditional orchestras, the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln and its new music director Andrés Oroczo-Estrada on the podium. Before that, forest bliss and witchcraft reign in the overture to Engelbert Humperdinck's marvellous fairytale opera ‘Hansel and Gretel’. For Johannes Brahms, ‘since Joseph Haydn, a symphony was no longer fun, but a fight to the death.’ With his natural, melodically compelling Second Symphony, composed on Lake Wörthersee, he undoubtedly won this battle brilliantly.
