The concert begins with a tribute to one of the greats of new music, Giya Kancheli, who was born 90 years ago in Tbilisi. Kancheli's music is just as timelessly beautiful as that of Sergei Prokofiev, whose first violin concerto was even considered too romantic in Paris in 1923 - now it is one of the great concertos of the 20th century, this time interpreted by the Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanei, who was the youngest winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1990. The Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, under the direction of charismatic maestro Andrey Boreyko, demonstrates its expertise in the field of modern classical music. After the interval, the whimsical and enigmatic adventures of the knight of the sad figure, Don Quixote, in the dazzling sound of Richard Strauss with the celebrated cello soloist Florian Simma will delight the audience.
