Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony is simply "the Ninth". In its length and with a vocal cantata based on Schiller's "Ode to Joy" as the finale, it was a visionary work. It was heavily used by terrorist regimes in the 20th century, which would certainly not have pleased its composer. What remains is a magnificent symphonic soundscape and the humane, currently very topical message of a dreamed-of ideal world in which people can live peacefully as brothers and sisters. This monumental work will be performed before Christmas and the New Year with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, a prominent vocal ensemble and the Salzburg Bach Choir. Roberto González-Monjas, the orchestra's new chief conductor, is a musician with a big heart and a masterful command of his craft, guaranteeing an interpretation that is as timeless as it is contemporary. May "Freude, schöner Götterfunken" light up the darkness of the present.
