Anna Vinnitskaya, internationally successful pianist from Russia and professor of piano in Hamburg, is considered a specialist for the music of her compatriot Sergei Rachmaninov, which demands all brilliance and virtuosity. As a composer, he was far more than a keyboard wizard, but he did feel a kinship with Nicolo Paganini, as evidenced by his brilliant and inventive variations on the last of the "Devil's Violinist" capricci for piano and orchestra. The symphonist Rachmaninoff
is overshadowed by the pianist, which is unfair. A piece like the tone poem "The Isle of the Dead" after the painting by Arnold Böcklin shows him as a grandiose, expressionistic sound painter of the late Romantic period.
The WDR Sinfonieorchester under the direction of the prominent Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru performs the 3rd Symphony by Johannes Brahms, which was once proclaimed the "Eroica of Brahms" by the maestro of the premiere, Hans Richter, although there is hardly anything "heroic" to be discovered in it, but much that is compellingly melodic, songlike, and internalized.
