The WDR Sinfonieorchester under the direction of the prominent Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru performs the symphonic tone poem "Also sprach Zarathustra". Even pop and rock music audiences are familiar with its upbeat opening - it is one of the real "classical hits". But what follows is also an enchanting tone painting in which the singular master of the late romantic orchestra, Richard Strauss, has translated the content of Friedrich Nietzsche's four philosophical poems about the ancient Persian founder of the fire religion into a gripping musical narrative. In his work, Zarathustra is the searching human being who finds liberation in the light of the sun, in dance, and in the "laughter of the universe." Anna Vinnitskaya, internationally successful pianist from Russia and professor of piano in Hamburg, is considered a specialist for the music of her compatriot Sergei Rachmaninov, which demands all brilliance on the keys. Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto combines all the virtues of its composer - symphonic creative power, melodic conciseness, fiery virtuosity, lyrical emphasis and the beautiful melancholy of the Slavic soul.
