A vibrant journey through Europe leads from the luminous and stirring "Images from Hungary" of the folk music researcher and Magyar "classic of modernity", Béla Bartók, first to Leipzig, where Clara Schumann first heard the atmospheric, deeply romantic piano concerto of her husband Robert in 1841. This time a celebrated piano poet of today, Elisabeth Leonskaja, sits at the piano. The Schumanns were most intimately connected with Johannes Brahms, who in turn was an important role model for Edward Elgar. In the second part, on the desks of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Danish world-class maestro Thomas Dausgaard, the sheet music of the lyrical hymn First Symphony of "British Brahms" is presented. The legendary Brahms conductor Hans Richter launched it in Manchester in 1908. England's great music belongs to the sounding landscapes of Europe.
