The musical relations between England and France are older, more diverse and stronger than one might think. And so the guests from Bordeaux, home to one of France's great orchestras, present masterpieces from both sides of the English Channel under their famous conductor from Birmingham, Paul Daniel, and the French star violinist Renaud Capuçon. Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto, written for the legendary Viennese cosmopolitan Fritz Kreisler, is dedicated to splendid, virtuoso high romanticism and "a beloved woman". Benjamin Britten's Passacaglia tells the tragic story of the fisherman Peter Grimes, who lives and dies by the sea. The young Georges Bizet has created a fantastic homage to Viennese classical music with a witty, lively symphony long before his worldwide success "Carmen".
