"This is a wonderful work! I am very happy to be the first conductor to present it in London," wrote the legendary Hans Richter to Dvořák in 1887, "but why did you hide it for so long? It belongs in the first row of your compositions!" Dvořáks rarely heard, exquisite and stirring "Symphonic Variations" mark the beginning of an evening of great romance with the Dresden Philharmonic and the young Polish maestro Krzysztof Urbánski, who is currently making a great career. Alban Berg and the Romanticism? They called him a "twelve-tone romantic" because he combined new music with great emotion. The wonderful violin concerto confirms this. Leila Josefowicz, the world-class violinist who is a guest in Salzburg, will play it. The finale will be Felix Mendelssohn's "Italian", a music pulsating with truly romantic feelings, dreaming of the northern homeland in between. In the final movement, the "Saltarello", Mendelssohn has vividly brought the fascination and danger of the southern carnival to life, making sound.
