This multifaceted concert ends with the poignant and tragic 5th Symphony by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, one of the masterpieces of European Romanticism, which leads "through night to light" in the finale. Conductor Shiyeon Sung is a star not only in her native country South Korea, where she is considered a pioneer on the podium. Before 2017, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra was the Royal Orchestra of Flanders and is one of the leading orchestras in multilingual Belgium. The "Rhapsodie Dahoméenne" by Belgian late Romantic composer August De Boeck, which opens this concert evening, tells the story of street musicians from Dahomey in Africa who used to play on the Brussels market in days gone by. In between, the young, very successful South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim devotes herself to one of the most popular and melodically inventive of the great Romantic violin concertos, that of Max Bruch.
