"Sending light into the depths of the human heart", said Robert Schumann, "is the artist's profession". The profound poetic content and the abundance of memorable melodies make his popular 4th Symphony a highlight of the Romantic period. The fairytale-like "Melusine" overture by Schumann's friend Felix Mendelssohn is a fitting accompaniment. Sergei Prokofiev, also a pianist of distinction, premiered his classical and melodious 3rd Piano Concerto himself in Chicago in 1921. This time, the British pianist Isata Kenneth-Mason, one of the most remarkable pianists of the younger generation, is at the piano. One of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands, the one from Den Haag, will be conducted by the successful young German conductor Ruth Reinhardt, who will make her debut in Salzburg with this program.
