The Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, formerly a frequent guest in Salzburg, performs Richard Wagner's great world theater "Der Ring des Nibelungen", an eternally valid parable of power and Eros, "without words" under its British chief conductor Michael Francis. In the much-acclaimed orchestral version by legendary conductor Lorin Maazel, all the essential motifs and melodies of the tetralogy resound in a kind of burning mirror - a compelling sound magic. "I cannot grasp the spirit of music in any other way than in love" wrote Wagner, "I certainly honor all that is good, no matter what people it comes from" wrote his predecessor Carl Maria von Weber. Weber's melodic and rhythmic marvel for clarinet and orchestra is therefore a worthy prelude to the instrumental opera. Star clarinettist Sharon Kam will enchant the audience with the E flat major concerto before the interval.
