Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1

In a competition for the most effective beginning of a piece of music, the B-flat minor Piano Concerto of the Russian master would be certain of a place on the pedestal - next to Beethoven's "Fifth" and Straussen's "Also sprach Zarathustra". The piano exerts a hypnotic effect that is impossible to resist.

But the internationally acclaimed English pianist Stephen Hough has enough to do even after that, because Tchaikovsky leads into a profoundly romantic world of feeling that includes sensitive, subtle melancholy alongside powerful eruptions. The Tonkünstler-Orchester of Lower Austria and its principal conductor Yutaka Sado give a guest performance this evening with a thoroughly Russian program.
One of the most successful symphonies written in the 20th century follows after the intermission. Dmitri Shostakovich's "Fifth," with its subtitle "The Becoming of the Personality," marked the composer's forced turn toward "socialist realism" in the Soviet Union in 1937, yet it was immediately received with jubilation in the West as well. The work is simply stirring in its melodic and rhythmic energy and already foreshadows in the background the tragedy that was to define the following years of its creator's life.
